The London LGBT Almanac 2nd Edition, published by Kairos in Soho, is available as a uniquely designed print publication.
The Almanac explores intersectional lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans identity, community action, heritage, and equality, sharing new research findings and original creative essays, visual art, photography, and poetry from acclaimed photographers and over 20 contributors. The Almanac ‘offers a small cutting of what is ultimately the tapestry that is LGBT “community”‘ writes Marai Larasi, Director of Imkaan. The 2nd Edition has a focus on women’s organising.
The Almanac 2nd Edition measures changes to the London LGBT voluntary and community sector since the 1st Edition was published in 2011. These findings are relevant across equality sectors and include:
- The number of staff in the sector has declined by 20% since 2010
- There is a significant inequality in resources between ‘mainstream’ LGBT organisations and organisations that work on the combination of sexuality/gender identity and another equality issue (e.g. race, disability)
- If the LGBT population in London was making its charitable give to LGBT organisations, the sector ought to be earning between £3-11m in donations alone, compared with the less than £1m it receives in donations currently
- The LGBT sector has 0.038% of the income of London’s voluntary sector
Elizabeth Henry, CEO of Race on the Agenda writes in the forward: ‘the issues that London’s LGBT sector works with are wholly analogous to other equality sectors… For me these and the many other issues depicted in this 2nd Edition of the Almanac serve as a stark reminder of the similarities of struggle and strength across the equalities voluntary and community sector.’
At a time when the voluntary sector is under pressure to consolidate into fewer and larger organisations, and equality is under attack from the government, the Almanac celebrates the huge diversity of London LGBT organising and provides an evidence base on which to build a stronger independent equalities sector.
The Almanac will be invaluable reading for anyone with an interest in equality or the voluntary and community sector, including individuals; voluntary and community organisations; infrastructure organisations; funders; academics; and policy makers.
The London LGBT Almanac 2nd Edition costs £34.99 / £24.99 concession (+ p & p). Detailed profiles of over 100 LGBT groups free with each copy purchased.
