Committee report: ‘A Bill of Rights for the UK?’ posted: 14 August 08
On 10 August 2008, Parliament’s Joint Committee on Human Rights published its Twenty-ninth report on ‘A Bill of Rights for the UK?’. The Committee recommends that strengthening the legal protection for the rights of vulnerable and marginalised people should be one of the principal purposes of any new Bill of Rights.

Civil Justice Council recommendations on collective action posted: 14 August 08
In July 2008, the Civil Justice Council published ‘Improving Access to Justice through Collective Actions. Developing a More Efficient and Effective Procedure for Collective Actions. A Series of Recommendations to the Lord Chancellor’.
Consultation: Comprehensive Area Assessment posted: 14 August 08
On 29 July 2008, the seven partner inspectorates launched the second joint consultation document setting out a proposed approach to the new Comprehensive Area Assessment (CAA).
CLG: ‘Principles of Representation’ posted: 14 August 08
Communities and Local Government has published ‘Principles of Representation: A framework for effective third sector participation in Local Strategic Partnerships’ (11 August 2008).
CLG: ‘Communities in Control. Equality Impact Assessment’ posted: 14 August 08
On 30 July 2008, Communities and Local Government published a provisional assessment of how the ‘Communities in Control’ White Paper may impact upon key equalities groups.

Report on access to healthcare for people with learning difficulties posted: 14 August 08
The report of an independent inquiry into Access to Healthcare for People with Learning Disabilities, led by Sir Jonathan Michael, was published on 29 July 2008. The report found that People with learning disabilities find it much harder than others to access treatment for general health problems unrelated to their disability.

UK AIDS and Human Rights Project report: ‘Empty Promises’ posted: 14 August 08
The UK AIDS and Human Rights Project has published ‘Empty Promises – Holding the UK Government Accountable for its Commitments on HIV, Human Rights and Vulnerable Groups’.

Independent Academic Research Studies has published ‘Homophobic Bullying and Human Rights. Shared values for a shared future’.
EHRC: Equality News Issue 2 posted: 14 August 08
The second issue of the Equality and Human Rights Commission’s ‘Equality News’ includes legal updates, reports on parliamentary work and new guidance, as well as news from Scotland and Wales.
CSCI bulletin addressing needs of BME people posted: 14 August 08
The Commission for Social Care Inspection has published a new bulletin called ‘Putting people first: Equality and Diversity Matters 2’, which aims to address the needs of black and minority ethnic people using care services.

Young Equals: Age Discrimination Day of Action – 28 August 2008 posted: 14 August 08
Young Equals (a group of charities, children and young people campaigning to stop age discrimination) is holding a ‘Day of Action’ on Thursday 28 August to gather evidence of unfair age discrimination as experienced by under 18s.

'Building Bridges’ Information Day – 28 August 2008 posted: 14 August 08
As part of the Building Bridges Equalities Programme, SCVO has secured funding from the European Structural Funds and the Equalities and Human Rights Commission for an innovative pilot project targeting the personal skills development of BME women, Disabled women and women returners in the workplace, in tandem with the strategic implementation of equalities mainstreaming within third sector organisations.
