Cabinet Office consultation: Protecting the Debate

The Cabinet Office is seeking views on proposed changes to electoral law aimed at improving political debate, and helping electors to make an informed decision at the ballot box. The consultation closes on 22 October 2018.

Theresa May says:

The ideal of a truly plural and open public sphere where everyone can take part is in danger…

This consultation looks specifically at intimidation, influence and transparency of information in an ‘increasingly hostile political environment’.

The Cabinet Office considers the following recommendations:

  • the Government should consult on the introduction of a new offence in electoral law of intimidating Parliamentary candidates and party campaigners
  • the Government should extend electoral law requirements for an imprint on campaigning materials to electronic communications

Submit your views on a series of questions by 22 October 2018.
